Weekly Family Projects Update (Week of 09/09/24): Saving for Our Car-Sharing Venture!

This past week, we continued making progress toward our goal of saving up for a car to list on a car-sharing platform—hopefully something like a used BMW M3 or Audi RS4. It’s all part of our larger mission to teach our son practical skills and entrepreneurship while working together as a family. We’re also listing one of our family cars on Turo to help reach that goal.

We’ve always believed that hands-on work builds character and a strong work ethic. That’s why we take on tasks that many families might typically outsource, not only to save money but also to gain valuable experience and spend quality time together. Plus, it’s a great way to instill lifelong lessons in our son as he prepares for a future shaped by AI and automation.

Here’s a recap of what we accomplished last week:

🌱 Landscaping:

We had some lawn mowing duties, which brought in $100. While it might sound simple, it was a great opportunity for our son to learn the importance of consistency and doing a thorough job.

🌲 Forestry:

We split and hauled two cartloads of wood, which earned us $70. Not only does this help with future firewood needs, but it also shows that hard work pays off, quite literally!

🚗 Car Wash:

Washing the exterior of our Lucid earned us $25. It’s another easy task that demonstrates the value of keeping things in top shape—whether it’s a car, a home, or a business!

🛠️ Project: Coffee Table for the Treehouse:

We made significant progress on building a small coffee table for the treehouse and earned/saved $75 by completing half the project. The total estimated cost of the table is $150, so we’re halfway there! This project is a fun way to involve our son in carpentry and teach him how to create something useful from scratch.

🔥 Firewood Platform:

Our firewood platform is coming together nicely—we completed between 50% and 100% of the work this week, saving us another $200. This is one of the bigger projects we've undertaken recently, and it's great to see progress.

By the end of the week, we saved a total of $470, bringing our total savings to $6,525. We’re steadily moving closer to our goal, one project at a time. And while the dream is to eventually list a luxury car like a BMW M3 or Audi RS4 on Turo, the immediate plan is to also list one of our family cars to generate some passive income.

Why We Do It:

Beyond just saving for the car-sharing venture, the most rewarding part of this journey is seeing our son grow through hands-on experiences. He’s learning important lessons—budgeting, responsibility, and the value of hard work. In a world increasingly shaped by technology, we believe it’s essential to maintain practical skills that build confidence and independence.

Next week, we’ll be focusing more on entrepreneurial skills as we continue working towards our goal. We’re looking forward to sharing more about listing the family car on Turo and teaching our son some new kitchen skills! Stay tuned for updates on our journey to financial independence and skill-building.

If you’ve been following along, thank you! We hope our story inspires you to take on your own family projects or teach your kids valuable life skills. We’d love to hear from you—leave a comment or follow our blog for more updates!
