Syama Residence Review: A Serene Boutique Stay in Ayutthaya

On our Thailand road trip this year we traveled to the historic city of Ayutthaya. Our journey included a stay at Syama Residence, a charming boutique hotel that offered a mix of comfort, style, and a touch of local flavor. In this blog post, we'll share our detailed review of Syama Residence, highlighting both the positive aspects and areas for improvement, to help you decide if this is the right accommodation for your next trip to Ayutthaya.

Room Design and Comfort: One of the standout features of Syama Residence is the design and comfort of the rooms. We were immediately impressed by the spacious layout, which provided ample room for our family. The aesthetic is a blend of modern and traditional elements, with high-quality fixtures that add a touch of luxury. The balcony offered a peaceful view, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

Breakfast Café: The retro-themed breakfast café at Syama Residence became one of our favorite spots. The buffet may not be as extensive as larger hotels, but it compensates with a selection of interesting local snacks and dishes to order. The simple, yet authentic, offerings provide a genuine taste of the region's cuisine. It’s a great way to start the day, especially when accompanied by the café's nostalgic decor. It contrasts with the coffee shop itself that is nestled in the residence and has a modern and upscale aesthetics.

Morning Runs and Scenic Paths: For those who enjoy a morning run, Syama Residence offers (almost) direct access to a path along a canal that leads to a historical park. Running amidst the ancient ruins and lush greenery was a unique and invigorating experience. However, be prepared to encounter a few stray dogs, which is quite common in Thailand. Over the years we have learned to deal with this and we would be more than happy to share a few tips.

Facilities: While Syama Residence excels in comfort and design, it does have some limitations. The resort lacks facilities such as a pool or gym, which might be a drawback for some guests. Additionally, certain parts of the building feel more rustic and could use some modern updates.

Service Quality: The staff at Syama Residence are very friendly and attentive, always greeting us with a smile. However, it was apparent that they lacked formal hospitality training. Despite this, their willingness to assist and their warm demeanor added a personal touch to our stay.

Comparison to Sala Hotel: We also stayed in the past at Sala Hotel next door, which offers a more modern experience. Sala Hotel features an excellent restaurant and a small pool, but the rooms are smaller and not as well-built compared to those at Syama Residence. It’s a good alternative for those seeking a more contemporary stay with additional amenities.

Conclusion: Overall, our stay at Syama Residence was a delightful experience. The hotel's tranquil environment and well-designed rooms make it a great choice for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the historical charm of Ayutthaya. While there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of facilities and staff training, the genuine local experience and comfort provided by Syama Residence outweigh these drawbacks.

We hope you enjoyed this review and found it helpful. Stay tuned as we continue our journey, driving north all the way to the border with Laos, bringing you more travel insights and and recommendations.
